POSITAL PARTICIPATES IN LAUNCH OF BISS ASSOCIATION
New Organization promotes No-Charge, Open Source Interface Technology for Industrial Control Systems
POSITAL FRABA has announced that it is participating as a founding member of the BiSS Association e.V. , a new organization dedicated to encouraging the use of the BiSS family of open-source industrial communications protocols.
BiSS communications protocols were developed by the German company iC-Haus GmbH as an efficient and feature-rich digital interface for communications between industrial sensors, actuators and control devices. iC-Haus is also the source of ASIC chips that support the implementation of this interface in industrial devices such as sensors, actuators and controllers.
Features of the New BiSS Interface
The BiSS interface is hardware compatible with the well-established SSI (Serial Synchronous Interface) digital interface, but offers significant enhancements. BiSS supports continuous (real-time) communications between controllers and sensors. BiSS Safety offers functionality for critical systems where safety ratings up to SIL 3 are required. Applications of the BiSS interface include manufacturing robotics, motor feedback, servo drives & motion control, position encoders and CNC drives.
An important new development is BiSS Line – an implementation of BiSS protocols that can be deployed in a single cable configuration and features forward error correction (FEC). This makes BiSS Line an ideal interface for servomotors where the single cable feature offers a significant reduction in wiring system complexity.
BiSS is offered as an open source interface. There are no licensing fees for either manufacturers of BiSS-enabled devices or their customers. BiSS Association e.V. is autorized to grant free-of-charge BiSS licenses to device manufacturers and BiSS users. The agreement defines rights and duties to make use of associated patents and trademarks for BiSS held by iC-Haus.
New BiSS Association Organization
The new BiSS Association organization aims to expand the use of BiSS technology throughout the world. It will also provide a communications platform for technical standards and cooperative marketing initiatives. POSITAL FRABA’S Jörg Paulus has been appointed Vice Chairman of the association, joining Dr. Heiner Flocke of iC-Haus (Chairman) and Alexander Ehnert of Hengstler GmbH (Treasurer). Membership in the BiSS Association is open to all companies and institutions. Members can participate in the development and promotion of this exciting new interface. Access to BiSS technologies and licensing arrangements are open to members and non-members alike.

POSITAL is expanding their TILTIX family of inclinometers with a new line of lower cost, lower resolution instruments. These new tilt sensors will have an accuracy of ±0.5° and a resolution of 0.01°. (By comparison, current models have an accuracy of 0.1°.) For many slope or tilt monitoring applications in cranes, construction equipment, agricultural machinery and water handling facilities, half-degree accuracy is entirely acceptable. Our new lower-resolution units are less expensive than our high-end products, which makes them a useful alternative for designers of cost-sensitive systems.

Like other members of the TILTIX family, the new lower-cost inclinometers are available in single-axis (0−360°) or dual axis (±80°) versions. Durable PBT plastic housings meet the needs of most applications, with extra heavy-duty cast aluminum housings available for very harsh working environments. They are rated for shocks of up to 100g. The output interface for these instruments is analog (voltage or current) which makes them straightforward to integrate into simple analog control or warning systems. Innovative Algorithm for Reliable Results
POSITAL’s TILTIX inclinometers are based on MEMS accelerometers that rely on monitoring the effect of gravity on a tiny mass suspended in an elastic support structure. Unfortunately, accelerations (e.g. due to rapid motion of the equipment to which the instrument is attached) will introduce errors in the tilt measurements. This problem is eliminated by adding a set of electromechanical gyroscopes to the inclinometers. Signals from these gyroscopes are used to compensate for the effects of acceleration, with the result that the new dynamic TILTIX inclinometers can be used reliably on mobile equipment such as construction machinery, mining equipment, cranes, agriculture machinery and anywhere else where sudden movements, shocks and vibrations are likely to be encountered. The compensation of these external acceleration forces is critical for every machine where clean measurements during dynamic movements are needed. The new dynamic TILTIX inclinometers have a measurement range of ±180° in two axes that covers the full range of motions.

POSITAL’s precision rotary encoders, first introduced in 2013, provided a significant step forward in encoder technology. With improved magnetic field measurement sensors and advanced signal processing techniques, POSITAL has been able to offer devices with accuracy and dynamic response characteristics that rivaled traditional optical encoders in smaller, more robust, more cost-efficient packages. Single- and multiturn models are available. For multiturn versions, the rotation counter is self-powered, with no need for backup batteries. Since the original rollout, POSITAL has worked to enhance the performance of these devices and expand the range of available communication interfaces.
Excellent Choice for a Variety of Industries
IXARC encoders with the CANopen communications interface are an excellent choice for applications in vehicles, mobile machinery, cranes, lifts and offshore equipment. The communication interface features the autobaud function, so these encoders can be directly connected to a CANopen network without the need to manually set transmission speeds. Diagnostic LEDs show device status. A variety of connection options are available, including cables of various lengths and radially or axially oriented M12 or M23 connectors. The POSITAL kit encoder components offer a number of advantages over the rotation measuring devices that have traditionally been used with servomotors and rotating equipment. Compared to resolvers, they are more accurate and offer multiturn measurement capabilities. They also provide digital outputs instead of the analog signals produced by resolvers. While POSITAL’s magnetic encoder technology provides lower precision than the best optical disk encoders, it is less costly, less vulnerable to contamination from oil or dust and more resistant to shock and vibration. POSITAL encoders also provide an all-electronic multiturn absolute position measuring capability that evaluates the full absolute angular position, including the total number of shaft rotations.

POSITAL magnetic kit encoders are easy to incorporate into normal manufacturing processes since they don’t require extra-precision, near-cleanroom assembly conditions. A built-in self-calibration capability can compensate for small sensor-to-shaft alignment errors. For servomotors with magnetic brakes, a special magnetic shield has been developed to isolate the magnetic pickups of the measurement system from the external magnetic fields.

Durable Speed Control SystemIXARC magnetic incremental encoders can provide an impressive combination of accuracy and durability for wind turbine speed control systems. POSITAL’s reliable incremental encoders are available with environmental protection ratings of up to IP69K. They can be programmed to provide up to 16,384 pulses per revolution, with a choice of Push-Pull (HTL) or RS422 (TTL) communications interfaces. Resolution and interface parameters can be set quickly and easily through the use of POSITALs UBIFAST programming tool.
Accurate Azimuth FeedbackIXARC absolute multiturn encoders with 30 bit total resolution are used to provide absolute position measurement for the azimuth control systems that adjust the orientation of the nacelle in response to changes in wind direction. In addition to high resolution, such applications also require sensors that can stand up to the mechanical loads that can be imposed when the nacelle structure is exposed to strong winds.
